I've now upgraded to the current release and the result is that posting
is not possible, even in non-moderated groups.
You aren't allowed to post to the groups:
This happens for already existing (admin) and newly created users.
Sadly, this message doesn't show the reason and I also don't see
something unusual in the logs.

Strange. I made no changes relating to that part of the code at all. It all
is working fine on my test site and live sites.
Does it show a newsgroup name after the error? Does the post form appear?
When you upgraded, did you use the upgrade script, upgrade manually or use
the install script?
If you could send a screenshot that might help.

I am unable to duplicate the issue here, but I see it on your site. I've made a minor change to post.php. Could you download the modified copy and put it in /var/www/html/rocksolid to test?
You can find it in the files for 'Retro Guy' here:
https://news.novabbs.org/spoolnews/files.php
It's 'post.php' that you want.

I've replaced it, but no change in the behavior.

Yes, the error shows up when the post is being submitted.

Could you add this line:
print_r($_REQUEST);
to post.php at line 32? Should be just after:
$logfile = $logdir . '/post.log';
Then try to post, then send me a paste of what's at the top of the screen (it should be all the POST data). It will contain your password, so please remove that.

As we have been debugging this through email and not here, I wanted to post here that a fix has been committed just now for this issue.
